Concord Middle School is again partnering with Concord Public Library and their inaugural writer/author-in-residence, Mr. George Jreije. There will be four after school meetings until 3:30pm, Monday, 4/14, Tuesday, 4/15, Thursday, 4/17 and Friday, 4/18. Students interested in signing up by Friday, April 11 at 9:00am (see Daily announcements for link). The first meeting will take place Monday, April 14 in the Main Office Conference Room.
George is offering an exclusive "How to Create a Graphic Novel" pop up club the week of April 14. The club would meet after school in the main office conference room until 3:30.
This four-part club helps students understand the essential building blocks of a graphic novel, breaking down the story elements, script structure, genres and age categories, as well as how to get them published. Meeting in-person for the first 1-2 sessions and virtually thereafter, students will have the opportunity to begin or revise a graphic novel with each day focusing on a different subject area. George will be giving each student a graphic novel that they will be able to work with directly!
Interested students should sign up by April 11 (See Daily Announcements for link)
Monday, April 14, (in-person at Concord Middle School after school until the 3:40pm late bus): Storytelling foundations are discussed to prepare student for writing their novels, which include character, setting, plot, and theme. Students will work on a pitch as well as form writing critique groups that will carry through the rest of the club.
Tuesday, April 15 (in-person at Concord Middle School after school until the 3:40pm late bus): We will discuss panel structure, the nuances between age categories, and graphic novel scripts. Using these lessons, writing the graphic novel begins as students will have flushed out their story ideas.
Thursday, April 17 (*in-person at Concord Middle School after school until the 3:40pm late bus): We begin to build the outlines of our proposals, which include character descriptions, author bios, author notes, scripts, and where illustrations should go. Students will continue working on their graphic novel scripts.
Friday, April 18 (*in-person at Concord Middle School after school until the 3:40pm late bus): Here we touch briefly on traditional publishing and the process of acquiring literary agents and selling novels to publishers. The focus will be wrapping up work on our proposals and giving each other meaningful and constructive critique. Students will have the chance to ask any lingering questions from lessons past.
*George would be on Zoom, students would be in the main office conference room. Mr. Cameron will set the club up on Zoom, using the TV in the conference room.
